"Friend" a Green Future

Greetings Carolinian Canada members & allies,

This is a pivotal time for southwestern Ontario. Pressures to local ecosystems are accumulating across the region and threatening the health of our communities.

As Chair of the Carolinian Canada Coalition, I invite you to cast a "vote for healthy landscapes" through a new donor program we're launching. Join me as one of 100 founders of our new Carolinian Canada Friendsprogram and we will grow your donation in dollars and actions. Read on and you'll see how.

The environment was never front page news during the recent federal election campaign. We have known for some time that public resources for nature conservation are drying up, and that trend is likely to continue. If we can't look to our governments to make the necessary investments, we have to look elsewhere. We have to look to our FRIENDS.

As individual, family or group, your pledge of $100 as a Carolinian Canada Friends Founder will translate into up to $1,000 worth of green programs and actions that are powerful community drivers of positive change. The greater number of Friends, the greater the leverage factor.

Carolinian Canada Friends will receive special invitations – for eco-tours with recognized experts, launch events, to see our programs in action, and other one-of-a-kind experiences. Our long-term plan for conservation is science-based, collaborative and realistic. Currently, we are:

• Collaborating with health, economy and culture sectors to save the natural wealth of this region through our Coastal and Ecosystem programs: The Friend fund will establish a sustainable base that will grow up to 10-fold by attracting local partners that in turn are matched by provincial, federal and corporate supporters.
• Building the capacity of hundreds of groups and communities in Biodiversity Hotspots to stewardrare species and habitats: Our landowner, community and youth allies will leverage your action up to 10-fold through our habitat action pledge program.
• Growing a global model for landscape conservation by seeding ambitious and visionary ideas with diverse partners: Your donation leverages healthy ecosystems, healthy communities and sustainable economies.

Best of all, by investing in Carolinian Canada in 2011, you will be one of our 100 founders of Carolinian Canada Friends for a greener future in southwestern Ontario. With a network of over 1,200 individuals and organizations behind us, we know we can be a positive force in helping to create a vibrant, ecologically-resilient region.

Brushcutter training course

Hello TVTA volunteers.

We hope to offer another training course on the use of the Stihl brushcutters which are used extensively in our maintenance work on the trail.
The likely date is May 28 in the morning. So if you would be interested in learning how to use these tools please email me at aday@uwo.ca and I will keep you informed of final details as they develop.

Gary Moore, legendary great blues guitarist dies.

Gary Moore died in his sleep yesterday morning during a Spanish holiday.

The Thin Lizzy guitarist was described by Sir Bob Geldof as "one of the greats" - here are 10 key facts about his life...

1. Gary Moore was born Robert William Gary Moore in Belfast on April 4, 1952.

2. He began playing the guitar aged just eight.

3. He left home at the age of 16, moving to Dublin to join band Skid Row .

4. Despite being left-handed, Moore learned to play the guitar right-handed.

5. Moore collaborated with a number of artists, including BB King and George Harrison.

6. He first played with popular rock band Thin Lizzy in 1973 after the departure of guitarist Eric Bell, but his first stint only lasted four months.

7. His solo hit Parisienne Walkways reached the Top Ten in the UK singles chart in April 1979, featuring the vocals of Thin Lizzy frontman Phil Lynott.

8. Moore was a friend of Fleetwood Mac’s Peter Green, releasing a 1995 tribute album for him titled Blues for Greeny.

9. He became interested in Blues music after seeing performers such as the Jimi Hendrix Experience and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers.

10. Although he was commercially successful in Europe, Moore remained virtually unknown in America.

Many of us are excited about the upcoming AGM of the Carolinian Canada Coalition at Port Rowan on Friday and Saturday May 27th and 28th. There are several reasons for our enthusiasm. The first is a chance to visit a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve in Carolinian Canada and engage in Naturefest - featuring many interesting talks, hikes and outdoor experiences – being held over the weekend. Another reason is our pleasure in being able to report on a very successful year and the growing scope of Carolinian Canada Coalition's work, the rising challenges it faces and the opportunities it offers for you to engage with us in the natural, economic and social future of the region.

Another major reason for our enthusiasm about the AGM is the special session we are offering on land use and wind towers in the Carolinian Canada region. Our focus is primarily on the impacts of wind towers on biodiversity and the environment, but the session will inevitably touch on other implications such as economic opportunities and health. We have a set of very well informed and interesting speakers presenting at our Chair's Lunch and also in a special afternoon session. We believe that your attendance at this session will enrich your understanding of wind towers and related land use issues in Ontario.

On behalf of the Board, the staff and the membership I urge you to attend this important meeting and take the opportunity of benefitting from an important learning experience and the chance to meet like-minded people in a very beautiful part of Ontario.
