Guidelines - Duluth Packs: Birth of a Legend If you've ever paddled a fine wood-ribbed canoe, you know the joy of natural materials. So it is with traditional Poirier-designed Duluth packs of sweat-stained canvas and hand-oiled leather. Like L.L. Bean boots and a fine-ground axe, Duluth packs "belong". After years of using one, Cliff Jacobson tells the story, explores common myths, and demonstrates proper use of this classic canoe bag in this week's Guidelines article. http://www.paddling.net/guidelines/

The Aroostook County section of the Norther Forest Canoe Trail This section of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail (NFCT) follows the northernmost portion of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway (AWW) and the St. John River to the trail's eastern terminus in the New Brunswick border town of Fort Kent, Maine. In contrast to other sections of the NFCT which easily lend themselves to trips of varying durations, the AWW has only limited put in and take out options. Get the lowdown in this summary. http://www.paddling.net/nfct/Aroostook-County.html

In The Same Boat We've come a long way from the days when paddlers recorded their travels in leather-bound journals by the flickering light of candle lanterns, using steel-nibbed pens and illustrating the pages with watercolors executed on the spot. Ours is an electronic age, after all. We have tablet computers, headlamps, and digital cameras. But there's no gain without pain, and we now have a new problem: "Choosing Electronic Cellmates." Want to learn more about this high-voltage topic? Then check out this week's In the Same Boat. http://www.paddling.net/sameboat/

Product Review Spotlight Glide kayak by Emotion Kayaks It's a stable boat, launching and paddling, and it handles well for its size and shape. We get plenty of wind where I live (SF Bay), and the boat isn't bad in the wind at all; otherwise it tracks very well. It's fast enough and it's a tough build. The seating and footpad systems are very good for starters; there's room to customize if you want... Rating: 10 of 10 by bartc. Read more reviews or get more info about the Glide kayak by Emotion.
